Comedy Death Ray

I thought I'd share this with the 5 people reading:

Comedy Death Ray is a weekly comedy show curated by Scott Aukerman and it features former cast members of Mr. Show, Human Giant, The Comedians Of Comedy, and lots of other funny people. The problem is that they're all in Los Angeles, and I've heard it's a pain in the ass to park there.

Now they have a weekly radio show. Aukerman was kind enough to put up the first episode by itself, but he said that the podcast is in the works.

Pretty much the sleaziest, grittiest, dirtiest, bunch of degenerates to actually give a shit about making music. The sleaziest, grittiest, dirtiest rock music ever. Even the guitar sounds like the floor of a dive bar.

They were on Minnesota's iconic Amphetamine Reptile label, home to some of the most amazing ear-filth ever put on record. The Cows were contemporaries with The Melvins, Unsane, and Boss Hog, and managed to out-filth all of them. Don't believe me? Here's their seminal album Peacetika, and a whole bunch of their singles and EP's, including their Porn split with Boss Hog, and the Plowed EP.

Happy Flowers by Mike, Age 8.

One time there was a band called The Happy Flowers. They wrote about all the scary and gross and funny things that happens to kids that grownups don't remember. They made their music sound totally gross and scary and funny like the words to the songs, too. They were from Virginia, which is a state South of Maryland. Even though they were adults when they made these songs, they still did a good job of making songs about kids.

You can't buy their music in a music store any more unless you're really lucky, so you should I put some of it here for you. Thank you and enjoy The Happy Flowers!

Roky Erikson was (and is) one of the pre-eminent psychedelic musicians. You can read his whole sad story here. Despite all of that, he's playing music again, but without the beard.

This albums is flat-out amazing. Guided By Voices were the Beatles of this scene, and these guys were the Rolling Stones, but if the Stones were passed over by future generations.

Hey guys remember Unrest? I'm surprised people don't, because they were really good. Here's an EP they did for 4AD records.

I'm not really sure how to sell people on this. The one adjective that everyone seems to be using to describe their output is "shimmering," so I'll go with that. I'm also going to add that they have a wry sense of humor and a deep knowledge of the people who made music before them, and around them. Fortunately, they decided to use their powers for good instead of evil.

What if I told you that one of the best mixtapes of the year was based around Seinfeld?

Wale is probably one of the smartest MC's I've heard in a long time. This is what Atmosphere would be doing if he wasn't busy doing lines and hitting on sad girls. This album tackles the usual backpacker issues like relationships, race relations, etc., but it manages to avoid most of the navel-gazey pitfalls. Also it features guest appearances from The Roots, Bun B, Pusha T, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Li'l Wayne.

Wale managed to find an excellent balance between cerebral rap and party rap. Yay for him and yay for us!

I feel compelled to post a Christmas album

I figured I'd at least make it a good one. This one is from legendary garage rock musician Billy Childish, and his new band, The Musicians of the British Empire.

I'm not sure what to say about this one. It's entirely self-explanatory, which is part of its charm. Either you know about Billy Childish, or you will soon.

This is a nifty little collection of 80's garage rock from the U.S. and Western Europe, put out by Glitterhouse Records back when they were starting out. There are lots of highlights on here:

The Black Chameleons' organ-driven freakout Door
The Seen doing a sick cover of Hey Joe
The Cynics hammering out Nowhere to Run
And The Stomach Mouths, who's lead singer sounds like Cartman.

Anyway, check it out.

After this, the lead singer of The Cynics went on to found Get Hip Records, and make long, rambling phone calls to The Best Show on WFMU. They're the only band I'm aware of on this comp who are still active. See them if they come to your town!

The Chap, whose editorial staff are occasionally on the receiving end of casual insults and mockery on account of their eccentric appearance and striking facial furniture, at first sympathised with Mr. Law, even in the light of previous court appearances for affray and threatening behaviour. But when one discovers that Law also has a conviction for manslaughter - he was jailed in 2000 for four years after he stabbed his brother to death - one realises that this is no mere eccentric, but someone who has delved rather too deeply into the darker side of dandyism and moustache cultivation. Let us give thanks that for every crazed Charles Law, there are a dozen jovial Jimmy Edwards.

Mule- If I Don't Six

I hope this works.

Mule was the combination of former early 90's midwest noise rock fixtures The Laughing Hyenas, and all-around dude Preston W. Long. Together the three of them produced a few albums' worth of redneck-punk before drifting off in separate directions.

Their first album was produced by Steve Albini, and it definitely sounded the part. By the time they got around to releasing this gem of an album, they had mellowed some, without losing any of the sleaze or shouting. They're less Shellac-ish this time around, but still. Damn.

I've been listening to this album a lot, and I recommend you do the same.
